18. How and when to get into the unions

Much press and publicity has been given to the recent negotiations between the acting unions and the producing entities.  SAG, AFTRA, and EQUITY are the primary acting unions.  In order to eventually climb the hierarchy of actors in Los Angeles, you will soon need to join one or all the unions, depending on the type of work that you specialize in.  So how and when should you join SAG?  AFTRA? EQUITY?  Do you need to join them all?  How much does it cost to join?  What are the requirements?  If you join, are you limited from doing certain jobs?  Are you affected by the recent agreements approved by SAG?  How will these agreements affect the future of the industry?
