17. How and when to go after agents and should I sign with a manager

As an unrepresented actor, you only have so much direct access to the coveted, prestigious acting work in town.  That level of work is first exposed to agents, who are entrusted to submit talented actors that are well-suited for each role.  How does one acquire an agent?  Should you try to sign with an agent as soon as you arrive in Los Angeles?  Are there different types of agents?  Different levels of agents?  What’s the difference between an agent and a manager?  How do you expose your work to agents that you are interested in?
